The Institute of Fisheries Technology, a constituent  Institute of the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University, was declared open by the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 20.02.2013 at Ponneri, Tiruvallur District. It has  a total area of 21 acres. This Institute was started with the  objective to offer self-employment oriented certificate courses on ornamental fish farming, aquaculture  and on harvest and post-harvest technologies etc.   An ‘Incubation Centre for Fisheries Products’ is being established in this Institute with a financial support of 178.58 lakhs from National Agricultural Development program (NADP) to augment National Gross Domestic Products through agriculture and allied activities. This centre will comprise of chilling, freezing, canning of fish and products development facilities with all necessary equipments to train fisherfolk, entrepreneurs and unemployed youth. They will also be allowed to utilize this facility to gain confidence to scale up any of these product lines separately. Facility for Fisheries Engineering by having a Marine Engineering Workshop and Navigation and Seamanship Laboratory to train fisherfolk to get employment in allied sectors is also being developed. In future, this Institute will be developed for offering under graduate degree programmes.
