Fisheries Biology and Resource Management

DEPARTMENT DETAILS:

I. Preamble            
Department of Fisheries Biology and Resource Management is one of the pioneering and basic units of the Fisheries College, functioning since the inception and currently has a Professor and Head with two Associate Professors, two Assistant Professors, one Sub-Inspector of Fisheries, one Typist and one Attendant. It is offering biology and capture fisheries related courses to B.F.Sc., M.F.Sc., and Ph.D., students. It is also undertaking research projects on biology, biodiversity, population dynamics and stock assessment of finfishes and shellfishes, brood stock development of lobsters / prawns, extraction of bioactive compounds, sea ranching, conservation  etc. and  related extension activities. 

II. Objectives  

  1. To offer fishery biology courses for U.G., P.G. and Ph.D. programmes 
  2. To study the biodiversity and standing stock biomass of commercially important finfishes and shellfishes of Thoothukudi coast 
  3. To assess the coral resources and associated ornamental fishes of Gulf of Mannar 
  4. To undertake conservation measures like sea ranching for the commercially important finfishes and shellfishes in the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve region 
  5. To organize training and awareness programmes in the field of fisheries biology

IV. Infrastructure facilities developed 

A. Laboratories 

This department has two laboratories for both teaching and research programmes. Several instruments are available for teaching and research purposes including a Stereoscopic zoom microscope, trinocular Nikon advanced research microscope with micro photographic apparatus, underwater video-camera, Fry’s modified respirometer, ELISA Reader, Electrofisher, Spectrophotometer etc.

B. Fisheries Museum

A biological museum is being maintained, in which about 600 specimens of various species of commercially important aquatic organisms such as finfishes, shellfishes, aquatic plants and other invertebrates and vertebrates have been displayed.  Skeletal systems of two different whale species are lodged in the museum.  Stuffings of dolphins, finfishes and aquatic birds have also been displayed. Five newly discovered species Solenostomus tuticoriensis, Xyrichtys rajagopalani, Scyllarus tutiensis, Sepia ramani and Sepia prabahari have  been deposited in the museum.  Various species of corals available in the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve are depicted.

C. Micro watch room

An advanced Trinocular Nikon Microscope and Nikon Stereocopic zoom microscope are placed in this room for microlevel observation studies.

D. Marine biolaboratory

A marine biolaboratory facility is available for conducting research on marine organisms under captivity.  Currently experiments on lobster rearing and marine ornamental fish breeding are undertaken.

E. Bioactive compound screening facility:

A facility for screening the bioactive substances from marine organism is available in the department.

F. Technologies Developed 

  • An indoor rearing technology for spiny lobsters was developed.
  • Indoor brood stock development technology for freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii was developed.
  • Brood stock  of  M. rosenbergii  was successfully  produced  from the  females  which    had  undergone  pre-spawning  moult  within 3½ hours by  artificial  insemination of spermatophore collected from the electroejaculated  males  at  5  volts.
  • Brood stock of Macrobrachium rosenbergii was developed in 120 days by feeding 3 ppm HCG incorporated conventional feed and feeding live feeds such as   bloodworms and Donax sp.
  • Hippocampus kuda was bred under laboratory  condition  and  350 larvae  were produced  and  sea  ranched  at  the  Kaswari Islands  of Thoothukkudi  coast.
  • Demonstrated the use of clove oil as anesthesia for fishes.

C. Exhibitions conducted 

            Eight exhibitions were organized at different places including TANUVAS, Chennai, FC&RI, Thoothukudi, V.O.C. College and St. Mary’s College and Thoothukudi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Thoothukudi. Specimens were provided for various exhibitions organized by the Dept. of Fisheries Extension to create awareness on endangered and precious resources of Gulf of Mannar.
